Cap and gown: Basic black is always in fashion

By Jason Lesley

Aariona Wright followed the senior class dress code of black shoes for Waccamaw High School’s graduation ceremony, even though one of her shoes was a walking boot.

Wright broke her ankle during basketball season and had been in a cast and on crutches until the day before she was scheduled to walk across the stage and get her diploma. She was happy to be walking.

Her classmate De’Quan Funny agreed to follow the dress code too, but he wasn’t going to buy a pair of black shoes. He used black spray paint from Ace Hardware to turn some brown shoes black. They looked pretty good, classmates agreed.

There was a shoe show going on under the graduation robes on Wednesday. Kadijah Page was walking tall in open-toed wedges showing green toenails. Donn’Asha Smith said she was comfortable in 4-inch heels.

Jessica Benton said she wanted to wear her black cowgirl boots but had to go with flats. No high heels? “I can’t walk in them,” she said.
