Art: A valentine for the Gray Man

By Jason Lesley
Coastal Observer

An illustrator and comic book artist who has developed a series based on the legendary character of the Gray Man will talk about his work at a program Feb. 15 in Pawleys Island. Gregbo Watson will demonstrate his techniques at Island Art Gallery Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Watson uses his dark sense of humor and fascination with legends and folktales to develop offbeat characters, wicked witches, ghosts and goblins, according to Island Art Gallery owner Kelly Atkinson. Watson has developed the Pawleys Island Gray Man as a superhero series character. The Gray Man of legend warns people on the island of impending hurricanes.

Watson will discuss his development as a comic book artist from traditional to digital media. He has done work for Marvel, Zenoscope and Upper Deck. He studied illustration and fine art at the Visual Art Institute and Museum School of Art in Greenville. He has a studio in Easley.

“I find that comics are where many children first find their love for art, and I enjoy fostering and encouraging that,” he said.
