Arts: Strand Cinema hosts screening with Oscar winner’s family

Julianne Moore’s Oscar-winning performance about a woman with Alzheimer’s disease in the film “Still Alice” will be coming to the Strand Cinema June 12 at 7 p.m.

Moore’s father, Peter Smith, a part-time resident of Pawleys Plantation, will speak and read a statement from the actress for the audience. Her grandparents, Ed and Mervil Smith, both 97, of Morningside Assisted Living in Georgetown, will also attend the showing. It will be the first time they have seen the movie.

Moore won the Academy Award for Best Actress, Golden Globe and British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards for her role as a 50-year-old university professor suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. “So many people with this disease feel isolated and marginalized and one of the wonderful things about movies is that it makes us feel seen and not alone,” Moore said during her Oscar acceptance speech. “And people with Alzheimer’s deserve to be seen so that we can find a cure.”

Peter Smith said Moore continues to seek good scripts with challenging roles. “Everybody is happy about getting the award,” he said, “but she’s been at it a long time, making 60-plus movies.” He said he didn’t know what his daughter’s statement will say.

Strand Cinema members will be allowed to purchase two tickets at $5 each at the Strand box office June 1-4 from 3 to 6 p.m. Tickets will be available for the general public at $7 each on June 5 and 6 from 3 to 6 p.m. Any remaining tickets will be available on the night of the movie, June 12. There will be no sales by phone, but the Cinema’s voice recording at 843-527-2924, ext. 3, will verify ticket availability. There will be no reserved seating for the movie.

There will be another showing of “Still Alice” on June 20 at 2:30 p.m. at the Strand.
