Election 2016: Some primary voters will find new polling places

By Charles Swenson

Voter registration in Georgetown County was running ahead of normal in the lead-up to the state’s presidential primaries. That could translate into a heavy turnout in Saturday’s Republican Primary, the first of two primaries this month. Democrats will vote Feb. 27.

“You could run into lines. We just don’t know,” said Donna Mahn, the county director of Elections and Voter Registration.

This will be the first election where polling will take place at the new Waccamaw Library and the Waccamaw Regional Recreation Center. Pawleys Island Precinct 1 moved to the library from St. Paul’s Waccamaw United Methodist Church. Pawleys Island 2 moved to the recreation center from All Saints Church.

Mahn didn’t have the exact count of new registrations. “It’s a little bit more than normal,” she said.

As of last week, the elections office had over 1,000 requests for absentee ballots, Mahn said.

Any registered voter can vote in one primary or the other, but not both. South Carolina doesn’t register voters by party.

The decision to hold separate primaries was made by the parties, Mahn said, although the state is paying to hold the elections. “It costs quite a bit of money to do this,” she added.

Only presidential candidates are on the ballot. Filing opens March 16 for local and state offices. The primary is June 14 for both parties.

Mahn’s advice to voters on Saturday: “Don’t be in too much of a hurry and

have the required photo ID.” The busiest times are traditionally when the polls open at 7 a.m. and just before they close at 7 p.m. along with the lunch hour. That may change a little in the Saturday elections. “It’s hard to say,” Mahn said.

Voters can check their registration and find the correct polling place by going to scvotes.org.
