Moe's Original Bar B Que: Vacations lead couple to business start-up

Litchfield will get a new barbecue restaurant later this month when Moe’s Original Bar B Que opens on Highway 17 near the entrance to the Waccamaw Regional Tennis Center and the Bridges of Litchfield subdivision.

Owner Meg Lonon said she moved to Litchfield Beach from Knoxville, Tenn., in December with her husband, Alex, and children Alex, 14, and Molly, 9, after vacationing here for 18 years. “We had an opportunity to open in Tennessee but chose to come here because we like the area and wanted to live here,” she said. “We think this is a great fit for the Litchfield area, right in between our competition, Hog Heaven and Prosser’s. We wanted to fit into the local area.”

The Litchfield restaurant will be the chain’s first in South Carolina. The original restaurant is in Vail, Colo., and the company has 30 other locations in eight states. The Litchfield restaurant will feature an open kitchen layout and a full bar. Customers will sit inside or on the covered, screened porches to eat Moe’s Alabama-style barbecue and traditional Southern sides and desserts. In addition to pulled pork, Lonon will serve oak- and hickory-smoked chicken, turkey, ribs and chicken wings along with an occasional beef brisket and fried catfish. The restaurant will offer a variety of take-out packages and catering, Lonon said. “The Moe’s brand is known for its leisurely, laid-back atmosphere,” she said, “and we knew it would be perfect for Pawleys Island’s way of life.”

Lonon went to the University of Alabama with founders Mike Fernandez, Ben Gilbert and Jeff Kennedy. The color scheme inside the restaurant features Alabama’s predominant team color: crimson. “It’s a very family-friendly, fun atmosphere, a good place to hang out or watch a game,” Lonon said. “The food is all cooked on site, smoked fresh every day. We are a local place, but we’ll resonate a lot with destination business, too.”

Moe’s Original Bar B Que has been named one of the “Top 10 Rib Joints in the U.S.” by Relish and one of the “Top 10 BBQ Chains in America” by USA Today.
