Election 2012: Money found to close budget gap

There was more than a lump of coal in the Christmas stocking for Georgetown County Board of Voter Registration and Elections.

Director Donna Mahn found enough money in the agency’s budget to solve a budget overrun for part-time worker pay.

She told board members earlier this month of a $42,000 cost overrun for part-time work. Additional help was needed to verify thousands of signatures collected by petition candidates after they were disqualified over a misunderstanding in the procedure to file a statement of economic interest.

Board members were concerned that their two part-time employees would have to be temporarily dismissed.

Mahn said she had found money in the budget that could be used to pay poll workers. She had lumped poll worker salaries in with the part-time help in her report to the board.
