Sports: Loris shuts out Warriors

By Roger Greene
Coastal Observer

The first time Loris touched the ball on Friday at Waccamaw, Ryan Bellamy took a punt return 78-yards for a score. On the Lions’ last offensive play of the first half, running back Levi Moody tore off a 65-yard touchdown run.

It was that kind of a night for Waccamaw, as Loris turned a three touchdown lead at halftime into a 49-0 victory. It was the third consecutive loss for the Warriors, who fell to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in Region VIII-AA.

Waccamaw opened the second half with an onside kick, but Loris quickly responded. The Lions (5-2, 2-0) snared the ball and midfield and followed with a 6-play, 50-yard scoring march, capped by quarterback Mickel Scoles 6-yard run.

Loris' defense got into the scoring act on Waccamaw's next possession, turning a Warriors miscue into instant points. With Waccamaw set up with a 1st-and-10 from its own 40 yard, Tyree Floyd recovered a fumble and raced into the end zone from 35-yards out to give the Lions a commanding 35-0 lead with 8:18 remaining in the third quarter.

Moody carried 11 times for 137 yards, leading a Loris offense that compiled more than 200 yards on the ground.

Jalen Simmons rushed for 33 yards for the Warriors, who will return to their home field next Friday against Aynor.
