Highway 17: Shift sought for Pawleys streetscape funds

A project that would put sidewalks and other improvements on the west side of Highway 17 near Waverly Road is proposed for removal from regional transportation plans this week.

The “downtown Pawleys streetscape” project is on the agenda for a meeting of the Grand Strand Area Transportation Study Policy Committee on Friday. The group is in charge of prioritizing projects that appear short-term and long-term regional transportation plans.

Georgetown County wants to remove the streetscape project from the list, so the $40,000 set aside for the work can be channeled to give additional funding to another project — completion of a bike path on Kings River Road as part of Bike the Neck, said Mark Hoeweler, assistant executive director of Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments.

The streetscape project “was part of a much larger project there is no funding for,” Hoeweler explained. “The funding had been tied up there for a long time and no activity had taken place.”

Meanwhile, “they’re trying to pool as much from other sources to see that the bike path project had enough to move forward.”

That project will also be discussed. The committee will be asked to recommend it be put out for public comment, according to Hoeweler

The GSATS meeting on Friday starts at 10 a.m. at Surfside Beach Town Council Chambers and is open to the public. The agenda also includes an update on all projects from the S.C. Department of Transportation and a number or new project proposals.
