Public safety: Midway Fire and Rescue wins top EMS award

Midway Fire and Rescue is the state’s Emergency Medical System of the Year in the small system category for 2011.

The award was announced Saturday at the annual S.C. EMS Symposium in Myrtle Beach. A small system is defined as one that runs less than 2,000 medical calls a year. Midway responded to 1,630 last year.

Midway was chosen by a group of peers at the EMS Association based on awareness for training and education in the community in areas such as CPR, child safety seat inspections, the community training center that has 15 instructors, and EMS education in schools, civic and Scout groups.

This is the first time Midway has received the award. “This is a great achievement considering that Midway’s programs are compared to some of the same size call volume departments in the state,” said Bob Beebe, Midway’s public information officer.
