Churches: Single moms get free oil change plus brunch

Pawleys Island Community Church has a singular gift for single moms: brunch with an oil change and a car wash. The program which began last year returns Saturday.

“The idea for this came from a pastor friend in Richmond, Ky.,” said the Rev. Don Williams, senior pastor. “Single moms often wear the hats of both mom and dad and frequently they are rearing children with limited resources. Their vehicles, which are vital to their families, often go unattended with busy schedules and all that they are responsible for. We thought it would be a great gift to these incredible moms, especially right before the holiday season when they may be traveling.” The church partnered with Island Chrysler-Dodge for the project, which open to the wives of deployed troops and widows.

From 8 a.m. until 2pm, single moms can bring their children and their vehicle to Pawleys Island Community Church where they will be greeted by one of the trained drivers who will take their car to Island Chrysler. Staff there will change their oil, top off all the fluids and check the air pressure in the tires. While the car is being serviced, the moms will have brunch served to them and their children will be fed and entertained.

When the oil change is finished, members of the student ministries and Pawleys Island Christian Academy students will wash and vacuum the vehicle before it is returned to the mom.

“We want to serve the single moms in our community who are truly heroes for all that they do,” Williams said. “Hopefully, the oil change will be a blessing to them and maybe they can build community with some other single moms while they are here.”
