Arts: Surge in entries for library poetry contest

By Jackie R. Broach
Coastal Observer

A poetry reading tonight at the Waccamaw Library will feature five Waccamaw Neck students who won the library’s poetry contest.

The reading starts at 7 p.m. Students will read their winning entries and accept awards, including checks for $25, journals, poetry books and tote bags featuring the Friends of the Waccamaw Library logo. The Friends organized, judged and hosted the fourth annual contest.

Winners are Destiny Taylor and Maddy Middleton, who attend Waccamaw Middle School, Brianna Lottchea and Shannon Gallagher, who attend Waccamaw High, and Lizzie Culliton, a student at Lowcountry Preparatory School.

There were 170 entries in this year’s contest — about double the number received in previous years, said Cathy Filiatreau, the Friends member in charge of the contest. She gave information about the contest to all middle and high school English teachers in the area, and she believes that is responsible for the increase, she said.

The contest was open to students ages 12-18. Winners are selected by a panel of five judges who make their selections without knowing the names and ages of the writers, or any other information about them, including which school they attend.
