Nonprofits: Family Justice Center gets approval to open shelter

By Jason Lesley
Coastal Observer

Georgetown’s Family Justice Center was awarded the bid to open a shelter for battered Georgetown County women and their children from the state Department of Social Services this week.

Coming during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, it was welcome news for Bev Kennedy, co-executive director of the Family Justice Center.

“This was an enormous undertaking,” Kennedy said of the application to get the shelter. She said the Family Justice Center received dozens of letters of support from the community and included them in its application.

“The greatest joy that the staff and supporters share,” Kennedy said, “is there will be another safe home in Georgetown County victims of domestic abuse and their children.”

The Family Justice Center has been providing alternative safe housing for victims and children since Citizens Against Spouse Abuse ceased operations in June after an investigation revealed mismanagement of funds. Kennedy said a safe house is the best means of assisting victims of violence because they don’t have to leave their community.
