Tourism: Marketing director mixes local knowledge with online experience

Lauren Cobb didn’t have to do much to convince the head of the county’s tourism committee that she understands social media.
“She’s a Facebook friend of mine,” said Helen Benso, who chairs the Tourism Management Committee.
Cobb was selected from scores of applicants to become the new tourism marketing director. She replaces Meredith Hart, who resigned earlier this year. The position was created through Georgetown County’s partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, which provides staff support to the county-funded tourism commission.
Cobb grew up in Mullins, but was a regular vacationer in the county before she moved to Pawleys Island after graduating from Furman University in 1984.
She has worked in advertising in the area and in North Carolina. She was interactive marketing director of LHWH in Myrtle Beach and for Case Solutions in Pawleys Island. She also worked as marketing director for Litchfield Real Estate.
“The first thing I want to do is get in and see where they are,” Cobb said Wednesday after returning from a cruise to Bermuda (“market research,” she said).
Although she has experience in social media, she believes there is also a role for print, “especially for the demographic that comes to Pawleys Island,” she said.
“She knows the community,” Benso said.
She has also earned an MBA in marketing through the University of Phoenix. The combination of local knowledge and online experience made her the most qualified candidate, Benso said. “I think Lauren will do a really good job.” [E-Mail Article To a Friend]
