Sports: Grace Barnett win three gold medals at state track meet

Grace Barnett won gold in three distance events, setting a new record in one, to lead the Waccamaw High girls to a second-place overall finish in the state AA track meet.

Barnett, a junior, set a record in the 800-meters of 2:24.1. That was 7.2 seconds better than the previous record, set in 2008. Barnett also bettered her first place time from the Lower State meet by nearly 3 seconds.

Barnett won the 1,600-meter run in 5:21.82, and the 3,200-meters in 11:54.91, which was 28 seconds better than Lower State, where she also took gold in those events.

Amelia Jones, an eighth-grader, was fourth in the 3,200-meters with 12:14.43.

Jones and Barnett teamed with Mackenzie Arnold and Kristina Chandler to finish second in the 4x800-meter relay. At 9:59.07, the Warriors were six-tenths of a second behind the first-place finishers from Bishop England.

Jamaica Alston, a junior, finished fifth in the 200-meter run, an event she won at Lower State. She finished in 26.61.

Valencia Syndab was fourth in the shot put with 33-feet, 8.5 inches

Waccamaw finished with 58 points, second to Dillon's 72 and ahead of Bishop England with 54.
