Public safety: POA Council schedules meeting with sheriff

An apparent rise in crime on Waccamaw Neck will be the topic when the area Council of Property Owners Associations meets next month with Sheriff Lane Cribb.

"It seems that break-ins, vandalism and more violent crimes are increasing on the Neck," said Mike Diem, the council secretary in announcing the meeting. "What are the facts behind these headlines?" Earlier this month, deputies arrested a Pawleys Island area man in connection with 35 vechicle break-ins over several months. Most of the vehicles were unlocked.

Recently, property managers at Garden City have reported a series of breaks-in at vacant beach houses and the theft of televisions.

In addition to the sheriff, the POA Council is scheduled to hear from Lt. T.L. Staub, the crime analyst; Lt. Neil Johnon, the uniform patrol supervisor; and Lt. Mike Nelson, the criminal investigations supervisor. They will also provide information about crime prevention.

The council meeting is Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Waccamaw Library and the public is invited.
