Traffic: Arrest made in hit-and-run death

A Pawleys Plantation man remained in jail Friday after his arrest in the hit-and-run accident that killed a Pawleys Island man Tuesday night. John Thomas Clark, 27, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, according to Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins.

Patrick Loper, 57, was killed when his moped was hit on Highway 17 around 11 p.m. He was knocked to the pavement and hit by another vehicle that drove off, according to the Highway Patrol.

The Highway Patrol said debris at the accident site showed the second vehicle was a Honda Civic. The agency send out a request for help locating the vehicle. It didn't say how Clark was found.

Collins said the Highway Patrol wouldn't be releasing more information at this time. "It's a pending investigation with more to follow," he said.

According to jail records, Thomas was arrested in May on drunken driving charge. Court records show he was found guilty in magistrate's court of reckless driving and paid a $445 fine.
