Former Midway division chief faces charge

The former special operations division chief at Midway Fire and Rescue was arrested Thursday morning by the State Enforcement Division on charges that he stole $36,000 from the state Fire and Life Education Association.

Robert A. Beebe II of Pawleys Island, 43, is charged with “breach of trust with fraudulent intent,” according to SLED. The agency investigated at the request of the education association.

Beebe was Midway special operations division chief and the Midway spokesman until his resignation May 8. He was responsible for training.

“There’s not a lot we can answer,” Midway Fire Chief Doug Eggiman said, referring to the resignation as a personnel matter. “Our committment is to the public and doing the best we can.”

According to SLED, Beebe was secretary and treasurer of the S.C. Fire and Life Education Association. The money was taken between May 2006 and March 2013.

He was booked at the county jail and realeased on $40,000 bail, according to jail records. The charge is a felony and carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison or a fine if convicted.
