Pawleys Plaza: Council approves small-box store
By Jason Lesley Georgetown County Council unanimously approved second reading of a compromise zoning measure Tuesday that will allow the redevelopment of Pawleys Plaza. The approved rezoning of the planned development limits the largest building to 60,000 square feet. Developer Sunbelt Ventures had originally sought a building of nearly 120,000 square feet. Representatives of Don’t Box The Neck, a group of citizens opposed to a big-box retailer on the Waccamaw Neck, asked members of County Council to consider the unique character of Pawleys Island in its deliberations prior to the vote. Fifteen people spoke to the council during the public comment period. Council members approved three new buildings on the property and added language to the ordinance that the three buildings must have at least three separate tenants.
