Sports: Crescent sweeps WHS in softball series

Crescent's first inning barrage undid Waccamaw's hopes of extending the best-of-three Class AA state championship softball series on Wednesday. The visiting Tigers put four runs on the board in their fist at bat and eventually would build their lead to five, all the momentum they'd need to score an 8-1 victory and claim the title.

"The first inning dictated the game," said WHS coach Scott Streiffert, whose team dropped Game 1 in the series 3-2 on Monday. "We didn't start well. We made a few mistakes and it got away from us early."

Waccamaw had chances to work their way back into the game, loading the bases with one out in the second inning and putting two with one out an inning later. But both times the Warriors (27-8) came away empty handed.

"We had opportunities to get back into the game," Streiffert said. "We just couldn't take advantage of them."

It was 19th state championship for Crescent and coach Gary Adams. The Tigers (25-5) have played Waccamaw for the title three times in the last five years. Waccamaw won the championship in 2010 and finished as runners up in 2009.

Riley Morris' RBI groundout - that plated Leah Boghosian - accounted for Waccamaw's run.
