Sports: Waccamaw falls in state tennis final

The Waccamaw High tennis team fell short in its attempt to defend its state championship on Saturday. The Warriors dropped a 6-1 decision to upstate power Christ Church – a frequent opponent for WHS in the state finals in recent years – closing the book on the 2013 season.

The senior doubles combination of Matt Fisher and Alex Czechner notched the only win for Waccamaw (14-4) at the Cayce Tennis Center in Columbia. Though the Warriors dropped all their singles matches, three of those matches went to a tie-breaker.

Waccamaw was without No. 1 seed Paul Hendrix, an eighth grader and junior player, who had a commitment to a national tournament.

"Christ Church is a very talented," Waccamaw coach Valerie Hawkins said. "We gave them a lot closer battle than the final score indicated. I was very proud of our effort. Our players gave it everything they had. It just didn't work out in our favor."

Also on Saturday, the Waccamaw High boys soccer team fell 2-0 to Bishop England in the the Lower State semifinal. The Waccamaw girls lost 4-3 to the Bishops on Friday in a match that was decided on penalty kicks after 110 minutes of play.
