Arts: Curtain rises for performers
By Charles Swenson
If self-expression is on your list of New Year’s resolutions, this is the week to start. Four area arts groups are looking for performers.
The Swamp Fox Players hold auditions Tuesday and Wednesday for “Barefoot in the Park”, the 1963 comedy that was Neil Simon’s first Broadway hit. Mark Brown will direct the production that opens March 2 at the Strand Theater.
The production needs five men and two women, all ages 20 to 65. The auditions will be from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. both nights. Call 527-2924 for more information.
The Murrells Inlet Community Theater holds auditions Jan. 8, 9 and 10 for “Souther Comforts”, which will open March 1. The play by Kathleen Clark is about a couple of senior newlyweds: a reserved New Jersey widower and a vivacious grandmother from Tennessee.
The director, Anita Grottenthaler, is looking for one man and one woman in their 60s or 70s.
Auditions are Sunday at 2 p.m. and Monday and Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Murells Inlet Community Center. Call 651-4152 for more information.
Two musical groups also begin rehearsals this month for spring performances.
No audition is needed for the Pawleys Island Concert Band, which begins rehearsals Jan. 12. The community band was formed in 2004 and welcomes anyone who can play an instrument.
This season’s program includes Big Band music, Broadway tunes, marches and themes from the Warners Brothers Looney Tunes cartoons. The band rehearses Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Litchfield Exchange. Members contribute $25 apiece to cover operating expenses.
For more information, go to the band’s website.
The Serendipity Singers is a women’s choral group now in its sixth season. It will hold tryouts Jan. 12 at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church. No experience is necessary, but enthusiasm is a must.
The audition will begin at 2:30 p.m. A performance is planned for April. For more information, call 215-1171.
