Education: Charter school holds open house

Although classes won't begin for another nine months, Coastal Montessori Charter School has an open house planned for Saturday.

The charter school was approved by the state and the Georgetown County School District this summer. It plans to open in Pawleys Island in August with 120 students in grades one through six.

The charter school will lease an unused wing at Waccamaw Middle School until it builds its own facility. That's where the open house will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. It will be a chance for parents and children to meet the charter school board and ask questions, said Rob Horvath, the charter board chairman.

The middle school space is ideal, charter school organizers say, even though it will require a waiver from the state Office of School Facilities because the building wasn't designed to meet elementary school standards. Being in a public school building will give the charter school added visibility, organizers say.

The school began taking applications for enrollment in October. The application period continues through Dec. 15.
