Legislature: Delegation posts local vacancies for state boards

Georgetown County’s legislative delegation is looking for people to serve on three state and regional boards and commissions.

There are open seats on the state Board of Education, state Aeronautics Commission and Waccamaw Regional Education Center Advisory Board.

This is the first time the delegation has advertised positions and is a response to calls from state Rep. Kevin Ryan for more transparency.

“It’s definitely a positive step,” Ryan said. “A lot of people don’t even realize these boards and commissions exist and who makes the appointments. Anything we can do to move toward getting more people to be aware these seats are open is a good thing.”

Ryan would also like to see the positions advertised online.

Applications must be turned into the delegation office in the old county courthouse by 5 p.m. Sept. 12 and will be reviewed by the delegation Sept. 14.

“We’ve never done it this way before, but I guess we’ll ask the applicants to come if they can on the 14th and we’ll give them about three minutes to tell us why we should select them,” said state Sen. Ray Cleary, the delegation chairman.

He expects the four members will discuss the applicants in executive session before a public vote.

“It’s a learning process,” Cleary said. But, “we’ve got to start moving on with the applications. It’s not like we get together every other day.”

To apply for an open positions, call Paulette Radcliffe, 545-3029.
