Politics: Democrat plans run in District 108

By Charles Swenson

A heavily Republican seat made more so by this year's redistricting, House District 108 has attracted one Democrat who hopes to fill the vacancy when Rep. Kevin Ryan steps down next year.

Jarrod Ownbey, 32, a Ricefields resident and a real estate attorney in North Myrtle Beach, announced his candidacy Monday.

“I hope to build upon the progress made by former Rep. Vida Miller," Ownbey said. Miller, a seven-term Democrat, lost the seat to Ryan last year. "It is imperative that we return to that level of leadership in order to improve the lives of the people of District 108; and in doing so, we need to first focus on creating and sustaining jobs and giving our educators the tools necessary to provide our youth with a competitive education.”

Two Republicans, Stephen Goldfinch and Randy Hollister, have announced for the seat, and two others, David DuRant and Alan Walters, say they are considering a run.
