History: Maritime museum announces building plans

The Harbor Historical Association announced last week it has acquired a vacant store on Front Street as the home for the S.C. Maritime Museum. The announcment came as the association unveiled the poster for the 22nd annual Georgetown Wooden Boat Show.

The association puts on the annual show and a boatbuilding competition to raise funds to establish a museum. It now plans to acquire the ground floor of the former New Store on Front Street at Francis Marion Park, according to Sally Swineford, a festival organizer.

The association opened the Georgetown Maritime Museum in 2006 as a temporary display in the Chamber of Commerce office.
