Fresh Market to open June 29

Mark your calendars.

The Fresh Market has set June 29 as the date for opening its store at Pawleys Island.

Work on the 21,078-square-foot store and adjacent retail space began in November.

The Greensboro, N.C., grocery chain has declined to talk about the project, but this week said in a release that the store will open next month and employ about 90 people, most of them hired locally.

"We are excited to open our store in Pawleys Island and to expand our reach in South Carolina," Craig Carlock, the company's president and chief executive officer, said in the release.

The development between Highway 17 and Library Lane was approved by Georgetown County in 2008 with the upscale grocery as its centerpiece. The project languished until Fresh Market contacted county building officials last year for permits for the $1.7 development.

The Fresh Market at Pawleys Island will be the fifth in South Carolina. It's one of 10 stores under construction by the company, which currently operates 101 stores.

Fresh Market has posted 25 job openings for the Pawleys Island store on its website. The company has scheduled a job fair for May 25 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Pawleys Plantation.
